Herbal Medicine

A holistic approach to healthcare

What is herbal medicine

Herbal medicine has been practiced for centuries across different cultures and is based on the belief that plants possess therapeutic properties that can restore balance and harmony within the body. Herbal remedies can be prepared as teas, tinctures, capsules, creams, or poultices, and are chosen based on their specific properties and your specific needs.

As a natural and traditional form of medicine, herbalism embraces the idea of treating the whole person, not just the symptoms, and aims to support the body’s innate ability to heal itself.

What is a Herbal Prescription?

This may take the form of a tincture, herbal tea, powder, or capsule formulation, for first time patients a two-week prescription is dispensed. After a follow up consultation this can be increased to a 4 week or 6 weeks depending on individual cases.

The cost of herbal prescriptions (tinctures) is £9 per 105 ml*. Most people will be prescribed a 420 ml bottle of herbs which lasts approximately 4 weeks. Long standing patients can order repeat prescriptions, although, new patients will need a follow up appointment in order to assess their progress before a new formula can be dispensed. Unlike conventional medicines, your prescription changes with you, as you continue to make improvements, your formula will need to reflect that.

Teas, capsules, powders, creams, and salves can also be prescribed. These custom prescriptions are all individually priced. All costs are fully explained before dispensing, and every effort is made to tailor prescription costs to each client’s individual budget and needs.

Important Guidelines and Considerations

Please note that I am not acting as your primary care provider but, rather as a herbal practitioner. As a result, I do not address urgent care or primary care issues. I recommend that you have a primary care physician (GP) or non-urgent 111.

If you have a serious health problem that requires immediate attention, you should call 999 or have someone take you to the nearest hospital emergency department.

If you notice an adverse effect from one of the components of your prescription as provided by me, you should discontinue it and then call the clinic to discuss it. You will not be charged for this call unless it requires me to reformulate the protocol substantially.

How to use herbal medicine

Herbal Prescriptions

The usage of herbal medicine can vary depending on the specific herb and its intended purpose. Here are some general guidelines for using herbal medicine:

Follow dosage instructions

Adhere to the recommended dosage provided by your herbalist or as indicated on the product packaging. Dosage may differ based on factors such as age, weight, and health condition.

Choose the right form

Herbal remedies come in various forms, including teas, tinctures, capsules, creams, and ointments. Select the form that suits your preference and the specific application. For example, teas are typically consumed by steeping herbs in hot water, while tinctures are taken in measured drops.

Be consistent

Consistency is key when using herbal medicine. Follow the prescribed schedule and dosage, and give the herbs sufficient time to take effect. Results may not be immediate, so patience and commitment are important.

Your body's response

Pay attention to how your body responds to herbal medicine. Note any changes in symptoms, side effects, or allergic reactions. If any concerns arise, consult your herbalist or healthcare provider promptly.
